Prem Grade Entires

Author: Seb Templeton

Hi everyone,

WSU’s adult debating convener, Chris Bishop, recently sent out an email regarding the adult premier debating grade. This grade is due to start on the 7th May. I am responsible for entering Vic’s teams. I know that I emailed out in the first half of the semester for entries. This email is to confirm those entries. There are not enough teams for a prem and a prem reserve grade – so everyone is in prem grade.

Below, I have listed the team entries that I have received. Please ensure that the details are correct – if you would like to be in a team and are not noted below please contact me at pollyhigbee@gmail.com. Some of you entered as individuals rather than teams so I have put you into teams. I have also assigned captain-ships to a person in each team. These people will be the contact point between their team and Chris Bishop, so it is important that if you are the captain (’C') you forward any emails you receive from Chris along to your team mates.

Teams:

Yogesh (c)
Ella
Richard
Hugh

Stephen (c)
Clodagh
Josh
Julia
Polly

Udayan (c)
Paul
Tom

Ben M (c)
David Meek
Brent
Ihaia

Jenna (c)
Aidan
Alex S

Sarah (c)
Holly
Lauren

If I do not receive a reply from you/someone on your team I will assume that the above information is OK with you and correct. Hope you’ve had great holidays.

Prem Grade and Prem Reserve

Author: Seb Templeton

These are two grades run by the Wellington Speaking Union, for Wellington Adult Debaters. The Prem Grade has been running for a few years again now, and we won it last year (like everything in NZ, and ironically the same day we won Joynt). The Prem Reserve is being re-instated as a second tier adult debating grade. If anyone is interested in debating in either of these grades, send an email back in the next couple of days – preferably asap – as entries are due later this week. Debates are on a few Thursdays throughout the year. For more info check the WSU website at http://www.wsu.co.nz. If you’re not sure which grade you should be in, or whether adult level debating is for you, send through an email all the same and we’ll keep in touch.

3 of the 4 Vic teams in the Wellington Speaking Union Premier Grade competition have made the semi-finals. Vic Liberty Lovers will take on Vic Voices of a New Generation in one semi-final, and Vic Kawerau Liberation Front will take on a non-Vic team Ginga Liberation Front. The semis are limited prep and will be on 19 August. Come along and watch!

Prem Grade Round 5

Author: Seb Templeton

Tuesday night saw the final round robin round of Prem Grade. Vic Freshers / Bornface saw Vic Kawerau Liberation Front, and Vic Liberty Lovers saw Vic Voices of a New Generation, on the Electoral Finance Act being repealed. Kawerau and Liberty Lovers took the two wins.

So at the end of five rounds the results for Vic are:
Liberty Lovers – 5
Kawerau – 4
Voices – 2
Bornface – 2

This will mean that Liberty Lovers (Bishop, Richards, Higbee, Whittington, Mabbett) and Kawerau (Tichborne, Beckett, Scott-Dowell, Templeton) will both break to the semi-finals. Make sure you keep an eye out for when those are coming up!

Liberty Lovers beat MAST (now on 4 wins from 4)
New generation beat IMPS (2 wins)
Liberation Front and Freshers were defaulted to putting them on 3 wins and 2 respectively

There is one more round to go, then the semis. Vic is looking good to break at least two teams.

Prem Grade Round 3 Results

Author: Seb Templeton

Round three was a good one for Vic, with the only loss coming from a Vic vs Vic debate. Vic Liberty Lovers, Kawerau Liberation Front, and Freshers all got a win.

The table now has:
Liberty on 3 from 3
Kawerau on 2
Freshers and Voices of a New Generation on 1

Tue 20/5: Prem Grade Round 3

Author: Seb Templeton

The Wellington Prem Grade round 3 is on Tuesday night. It’s at 7pm, meeting in RHG04 down in Rutherford House, at Pipitea. The Prem grade continues to be a good, but tough competition for Vic and there are always some really good debates to see or practice shadow adjudicating to.

Round 2 of the Wellington Premier Grade sees our four Vic teams again up against some of the top adult debaters (and past University legends) from around Wellington. It starts at 7pm and is held in the Student Union Building. If you’ve got a free night Tuesday, come along and watch. You’ll get to pick your favourite of heaps of extremely high quality debates.

The round is prepared, with the moot being: “That we should fund 12 months of Herceptin“.

Premier Grade Round 1

Author: Seb Templeton

The Wellington Premier Grade starts on Tuesday 8/4. Vic has four teams in this competition, against adult teams from Wellington. Last year a Vic team came second. Prem Grade is Australs style (Vic Champs style but slightly longer speeches) and will be a great chance to watch some really high quality debates. All debates are held at Vic at 7pm (prepping until 7:30) except one debate which is Vic vs Vic, which will start prepping at 7:30. If you want to see a great debate and have a free evening, make sure you come along and watch!
