Teams recieve 2 points for a win, and 1 point for a loss.
Win points are the total number of wins that all oppositions to a team have acquired over all rounds.
The ordering is determined by points, then wins, then by ‘who beat who’, and then by win points.
The top 2 teams in each pool will be taken into the semi-finals.

On Wednesday this week we’ll be heading to Peking House for our byo-extravaganza mid year dinner, preceeded by the final of Vic Champs for 2009. Congratulations to Richard 1 and Richard 2 (not joking) who will be fighting it out for Richard to retain the title. Next year we’re going to bar him.

The final will take place at 6:30 at the restaurant, and then we’ll have dinner, so make sure you bring along enough wine for a decent evening. It’s going to be $20 per person, including corkage, for a delicious set menu. Peking House is on Kent Terrace – just to the right of the Embassy Theatre at the far (from uni) end of Courtennay Place. If you’re going to come, please RSVP to sarahannewilsonnz@gmail.com or send Sarah a txt on 0274620546.

Many thanks to Sarah Wilson and Lauren Brazier for organising the dinner, and may the best Richard win.

Wed Wk 11: Vic Champs Semis

Author: Seb Templeton

This Wednesday are the semi-finals of our insane, 100 person Vic Champs competition. Two teams have gone from each pool into the semi-finals. Well done to Richard 2 and Ella 1 from Pool A, and to Richard 1 and Stephen 2 from Pool B. The full leaderboard for the rounds is up on the website at http://www.debsoc.co.nz.

So the semi finals will be:
- Richard 2 v Stephen 2
- Richard 1 v Ella 1

Sides will be decided by a coin toss before the debates start. The two debates will run one after the other, as Richard is (obvious, by his coming top of both pool) a great coach, but hasn’t mastered being in two places at once yet. Physics. So Richard 2 v Stephen 2 will be the first debate, followed by Richard 1 v Ella 1.

Everyone should come along to this – it’ll be great to see some really high quality debates, and there will be the chance to shadow adjudicate which, as many Thropy goers will tell you, is a very good way to improve your skills. A reminder also to all teams that there is $500 of prize money up for grabs in the final. Good luck!!

The draw for round 2 of Vic Champs is up on the website now. You can find out who you’re against here. The full leaderboard is also up at the home page (http://www.debsoc.co.nz). That should start getting exciting very soon. So see you all on Wednesday at 6:30 for round 2! Those of you who couldn’t make it last week, don’t be shy about coming along this time around. Your coaches will be able to get you up to speed very quickly and we’d love to have you along. And if you’re not in a team, you can still be slotted in somewhere. Just come along on Wednesday and approach me (Seb).

Also – if you haven’t paid the $15 membership yet – please do so on Wednesday. The week after that we’ll have to start naming (and shaming) people. Oh the shame.

Vic Champs Teams

Author: Seb Templeton

Teams are out!! CHECK THEM OUT HERE

There will be two debates each night, and everyone will debate in one of those. In the off round there will be the chance to shadow adjudicate, watch the top debates, and listen to a seminar to learn a bit extra. Running two debates a night allows us to have 12 coaches and 13 assistant coaches, paired up to coach two teams each so that the coaching can be at the very highest standard for all teams. It’s also really important to watch good debates, so having an off round can be a great way to consolidate your knowledge by giving shadow judging a go, or discussing good debates with people.

The rounds will be power paired. That basically means that teams always debate other teams on the same number of wins. This means that the debates are never too daunting, and that in the off rounds there will be some really good quality debates for people to watch. Always check here the Sunday before Vic Champs for the full leaderboard and theme for the next round.

Each night will run on the following timetable:
- Meet at 6:30 and have a 15 minute spiel about something specific in a debate: this week will be general info on the Vic Champs style of debating
- First debate teams prepare for 30 minutes, others stay for a 20 minute seminar: this week by Joe Connell on how to judge a debate
- First debate takes place
- Second debate teams prepare for 30 minutes, others have the same seminar
- Second debate takes place
- Head to Eclipse and repeat next week! Easy.

As mentioned in the weekly email, topics are announced with 30 minutes to prepare them, but each round has a specific theme. Round 1 will be on education. Please all be there ready to go at 6:30, so that we can get both rounds and our introduction underway quickly. If all that sounds intense don’t worry, we’ll be taking it slow, there will be no pressure, and people are welcome to ask as many questions as they like.
