On Monday in the Legislative Council Chamber of Parliament, Victoria won the Joynt Scroll – the most prestigious prize in NZ university debating – for the 5th year in a row. No other university has ever retained the famed shield for such a long period of time. See past Vic winners here.

It was an all-Victoria final, with Victoria 2 (Asher Emanuel, Richard D’Ath and Nick Cross)  narrowly beating Victoria 1 (Jenna Raeburn, Udayan Mukherjee, and Paul Smith) in a 4-3 split decision.  It is the second all-Vic Joynt Scroll final in three years.

Victoria dominated the speaker tab as well, with all six speakers in the top two Vic teams appearing in the top ten speaker list of the tournament. Richard D’Ath topped the tab, winning the President’s Cup for the best speaker of the tournament, which will sit on his mantelpiece alongside the Dame Cath Cup he won earlier in the year for being the best speaker at Easters. Richard is the first person to hold both cups simultaneously since Polly Higbee in 2006/2007. It is the fifth time in a row that Vic has won the President’s Cup. Former winners can be found here.

Richard and Udayan were also named as members of the NZU Prepared Debating Team, with Richard being named captain. Richard and Udayan are also members of the NZU Impromptu Team.

Asher Emanuel and Paul Smith picked up highly commended prizes. Asher also picked up the newly-awarded unofficial “Whittington Cup” for a novice speaker who is ineligible for the Most Promising Cup award (by winning a highly commended – or higher – prize.)

Victoria has now won every major domestic debating tournament since April 2007 and holds the cups for impromptu, parliamentary and prepared debating.

See the Victoria University press release.

Here are Vic’s Joynt Scroll Teams for 2010. Congrats to all who made teams.

Vic 2: Asher Emanuel, Richard D’Ath, Nick Cross
Vic 3: Holly Jenkins, Tom Mathews, Jodie O’Neill

Joynt Scroll Victory!!

Author: Seb Templeton

Vic has successfully won the Joynt Scroll for the fourth year in a row. After breaking Vic 1 (Seb Templeton, Stephen Whittington, Ella Edginton) top of the draw and unbeaten, and Vic 2 (Jenna Raeburn, Kathy Scott-Dowell, Richard D’Ath) third – Vic 1 proceeded to the final against Auckland 1, with Vic 2 finishing in third place.

In the final Seb, Stephen and Ella took out an excellent Auckland team in a unanimous 7-0 decision to retain the Joynt Scroll. This equals the longest ever run in Joynt Scroll wins (4 wins – twice before achieved by Victoria), and also means that Seb has defended the Joynt Scroll to take a second win, and Stephen also holds the Scroll for the second time.

All of the awards were:

Winners – Vic 1: Seb Templeton, Stephen Whittington, Ella Edginton
Third Place – Vic 2: Jenna Raeburn, Kathy Scott-Dowell, Richard D’Ath

President’s Cup for the Best Speaker: Stephen Whittington
NZ Prepared Debating Team Members: Kathy Scott-Dowell, Stephen Whittington
1st Reserve to the NZ Team: Ella Edginton
2nd Reserve to the NZ Team: Richard D’Ath

Promising Speaker: Paul Smith

Debsoc Wk 2: Joynt Practice

Author: Seb Templeton

This Wednesday we’ll be running a Joynt Scroll practice evening. It will give speakers a chance to experience the longer speaking times and points of information which are part of the Joynt Scroll style. We’ll explain it before we begin. However the night won’t be prepared debates – as that’s logistically a bit difficult – we’ll be having half an hour prep for them. If you’re trialing, or thinking about it, definitely come along. Also come along and shadow adjudicate if you’re thinking about applying to trainee!

Joynt Scroll Success

Author: Chris

Well, it doesn’t get much better than that. Victoria absolutely dominated Joynt Scroll 2008, winning it for a third successive year, and had two teams in the Grand Final for the third time this year (after Easters and Thropy). Check out this list of incredible results:

Winners: Victoria Two (Kathy Errington, Jane Pring, Seb Templeton)
Runners-Up: Victoria One (Yogesh Patel, Kathy Scott-Dowell, Ella Edginton)
President’s Cup for Best Speaker: Kathy Scott-Dowell
NZU Prepared Debating Team: Kathy Scott-Dowell and Kathy Errington
2nd Reserve to the NZU Prepared Debating Team: Richard D’Ath
Highly Commended: Yogesh Patel, Ella Edginton, Seb Templeton
Russell McVeagh Cup for Most Promising Speaker: Jenna Raeburn
Centennial Cup for Best Adjudicator: Gareth Richards

About the only thing we didn’t win was the Bledisloe Award for Oratory, but we can live with that.

Also of note:

  • Jane Pring becomes one of a select few individuals to win Joynt in her first year, and adds it to her win at Thropy earlier this year.
  • Kathy Scott-Dowell is the third Vic debater in a row to win the Best Speaker prize (after Polly Higbee and Joe Connell)
  • Jenna Raeburn is the third Vic debater in a row to win the Most Promising Cup (after Kathy Errington and Ella Edginton)

Full tab will be released very shortly.

Joynt Scroll Break

Author: Seb Templeton

Vic has been continuing its dominance at Joynt Scroll with a very successful break.

- Vic 2 (Jane Pring, Kathy Errington, Seb Templeton) has broken first on 5 wins out of 5 and 12 win (strength of draw points).
- Vic 1 (Yogesh Patel, Kathy Scott-Dowell, Ella Edginton) has broken second, also unbeaten, on 10 win points.

Vic 2 will face off against Otago 2 and Vic 1 will face off against Auckland 1 in the semi-finals tomorrow (Monday) morning. All other Vic teams also finished up extremely well – more to come later.

Joe Connell, Chris Bishop and Eleanor Bishop have all broken as adjudicators. Ella Edginton has also now accredited as an NZUDC adjudicator based on her breaking at Easters and Joynt Scroll this year.
