Worlds Results

Vic has had another good outcome at Worlds in Antalya, Turkey over the New Year.

On the team front, Vic A (Polly Higbee, Stephen Whittington) broke to the octo-finals where they lost out to Kingston A and eventual Grand Finalists, the London School of Economics A. Both Vic B (Seb Templeton, Ella Edginton) and Vic C (Kathy Scott-Dowell) needed only one more point to make the break.

On the judging front, all four Victoria judges (Chris Bishop, Jono Orpin, Gareth Richards, Jesse Wilson) broke – with Jono judging a semi-final, and Chris all the way to the Grand Final.

On the speaker tab Vic had four speakers in the top fifty in the world out of 800 competitors. Stephen Whittington and Ella Edginton were 41st equal, Polly Higbee was 37th, and Seb Templeton was 18th.

This Wk: Worlds Trials

Author: Seb Templeton

This only affects the nine people who have registered for Worlds trials, but remember that Tuesday and Wednesday nights this week at 6pm in the SUB are our Worlds trials. You should all have recieved an email from Ranald – the chief selector – outlining the details of this.

Worlds Trials Signup

Please read the information below if you wish to trial for the World University Debating Championships. Victoria may send three teams of two people. Trialists should remember that although the Society endeavours to get funding, in the first instance those who go as Victoria’s debaters must be able to pay for their airfares (around $3000 NZD) and be able to pay their 390 euro registration fee. The registration fee is due before 15 September.

Worlds trials will be held across two nights (11 and 12 August from 6pm at the SUB – selectors are Ranald Clouston (C), Christopher Bishop, Clodagh O’Connor McKenna, Jonathan Orpin and Michael Mabbett). Trialists must be able to make both evenings.

* The first debate will be an ‘individual debate’: there are three speakers on each team – there will be a Prime Minister’s Speech, Extension Speech and Whip Speech on the government side, and a Leader of the Opposition Speech, Extension Speech and Whip Speech on the opposition side. This is the system they use at Cambridge. Debaters prepare alone – the purpose being to assess individuals on their individual merit without the aid of a team mate;
* If the selectors think it is appropriate, the second debate will also be in this manner or they may choose to go straight into normal British Parliamentary format;
* The third debate, on the second night will be in normal BP style;
* There will be a fourth debate on the second night in BP style if the selectors believe it to be necessary.

All trialists will be guaranteed two debates.

Those wishing to trial must email the chief selector (Ranald Clouston – rac76@cam.ac.uk) with the subject ‘Worlds Trials’ in the subject line before midnight Thursday 6 August:
a.) stating that they wish to trial; and
b.) their debating and adjudicating CV (which tournaments you have debated or judged at, how you did – i.e. results – and who you debated with)

A list will be sent around the trialists of those who have registered to trial – for their information, which may be of use to trialists in deciding on the following:

Those wishing to trial may send additional information to the chief selector (Ranald Clouston – rac76@cam.ac.uk) with the subject ‘Worlds Trials’ in the subject line before midnight Saturday 8 August:

* Trialists may send in preferences for speaker positions, but these are indicative for the selectors only. Selectors will try and give speakers a variety of positions;
* Trialists may send in negative or positive preferences about whom they would like to be placed in a team with – these are only indicative for the selectors and not guaranteed in any way;
* Trialists may send in vetos over people who they refuse to be placed in a team with. Trialists should beware however, that should the selectors feel they should go into a team with someone who the trialist has vetod, the veto-er will be moved ‘down’ into the next available position. So you veto at your own peril.

If you are interested in adjudicating at worlds, please email Polly on pollyhigbee@gmail.com by noon on Thursday 16th July – this week. This is just a registering of interest. Obviously you may also want to trial as a debater, and may not be definite about your plans.

Worlds Semi-Final Results

Author: Seb Templeton

The news is very good! Polly and Steve sadly didn’t make it through to the Grand Final but performed extremely well by all accounts. The motion was THB that governments should subsidise private home ownership, and Vic A were OG. Everyone say a huge congratulations to Polly and Stephen for making us proud and going so much further than we’ve been in a very long time.On the adjudication front, Chris Bishop chaired the adjudication panel for the other semi-final. This is a pretty huge achievement and deserves a lot of praise. Bish may be judging the final but nothing has been announced yet.Finally we can all be slightly happier in knowing that there’s still a Kiwi in the Grand Final. Lewis Bollard is in it representing Harvard A. Lewis was in Polly and Stephen’s NZ Schools’ team, Stephen’s high school team, was in their semi-final just now, and is a good friend to the Vic Debating Society. Hopefully he can make Wellington proud. The final is between Harvard A, Oxford A, Oxford C, and Monash B.

Worlds News: Semi-Finals Berth!!

Author: Seb Templeton

Merry Christmas and happy new year! But way more importantly – Vic A (Polly Higbee and Stephen Whittington) have shot their way through to the semi-finals of Worlds over in Cork, Ireland.Although we’ve got a very good recent record at Worlds (22nd university in the world even though we missed Worlds in Canada two years ago) a Vic team hasn’t made it past the octo-finals for a decade or so – making this a pretty huge achievement. Polly and Stephen will be up against Harvard A, Queensland A and Oxford C. The other semi-final is between Oxford A, Oxford B, Manchester A and Monash B.

On the judging front, Chris Bishop and Sayeqa Islam both judged the quarter-finals, and I’m not sure whether they’ll be advancing to the semi-finals but best of luck to them too. Auckland A and Canterbury A both sadly dropped out in the octo-finals, with Auckland in the same room as Polly and Stephen.

So the big news is the semi-final. It starts at 10pm New Zealand time tonight (Saturday) so the result should be announced just after midnight. When we were in the Australs Grand Final last year the Facebook group was full of people online waiting for the result. If you’re up tonight, jump on the new Debsoc Chat page here, or under Debsoc Guide > Debsoc Chat. That will be the quickest way to hear the result, as well as to get excited for Polly and Steve. For more information on how the tournament has been going, and updates from now on, check out the Vic Debating blog at http://vicdebsoc.blogspot.com/ or the World Debating Website at http://www.debating.net/flynn/.

If we make the final then that will be held in the early morning our time. Check the sites above for more information on that. Good luck to Polly, Steve, Bish and Sayeqa!!

Victoria A has made the quarter-finals of the World Universities’ Debating Championships. See http://vicdebsoc.blogspot.com for more details. This is the first time in around a decade that Vic has made it past the octo-finals.
