On Wednesday night in Auckland at the SkyCity Theatre, Victoria won its fourth ever Australasian Intervarsity Debating title and its first since 1998.

Vic reached the Grand Final of Australs in 2007 and 2009, narrowly losing each year. 2010 was different, with Victoria recording a resounding 8-1 victory over Auckland 2, affirming that the ICC should be able to prosecute crimes against the earth.

Massive congratulations to the winning Victoria 1 team of Udayan Mukherjee, Stephen Whittington, and Ella Edginton. It was Stephen’s third Australs Grand Final appearance in four years, and this time he did not walk away emptyhanded. Along with the Australs trophy Stephen also became the 2nd New Zealander to win the Jock Fanselow Cup for the best speaker in the Australs Grand Final. Stephen also ranked as the second best speaker of the entire tournament, just 0.5 of a mark behind the best speaker.

We also shouldn’t forget the success of the Victoria Two team, who helped make this Victoria’s best Australs performance ever. Victoria Two was knocked out by Victoria One in an amazing Vic-Vic semi-final (such events usually happen only at NZ-only tournaments!). Congrats to Seb Templeton, Richard D’Ath, and Paul Smith. Special congrats to Seb Templeton, who ranked as the 7th equal best speaker of the tournament.

Every other Vic team did well as well. Victoria Three (Jenna Raeburn, Hugh McCaffrey and Holly Jenkins) ranked 24th, missing out on breaking only on speaker points. Victoria Four (Asher Emanuel, Nick Cross and Jodie O’Neill), all at their first Australs, finished on four wins and threatened some big name teams along the way. Victoria 5 and 6 also finished on four wins each as well.

This Australs victory in many ways is the culmination of five years of steady improvement by Victoria at Australs – from the quarters in 2005, to the heart-breaking losses in the Grand Finals of 2007 and 2009, and now finally a well-earned victory in 2010. The future looks very bright indeed, with Australs champions Udayan and Ella only in their third year of study, semi-finalists Paul Smith and Richard D’Ath in their fourth year, and a crop of talened new first years coming through as well.

If you still haven’t heard – we did exceptionally well at Australs!! In a veeeery close 5-4 decision Vic 1 (Polly, Stephen, Ella) lost the final to Monash 1. Stephen was the top ranked Vic speaker. Plus all four Vic judges (Ranald, Clodagh, Ellen, Bish) – including Clodagh, Bish and Ranald judging right up to the semi-finals.

Australs Update

Author: Seb Templeton

At the wonderfully organised Monash Australs sadly only one Vic team – Vic 1 (Polly Higbee, Stephen Whittington, Ella Edginton) – broke to the octo-finals. There they beat Sydney 2, and are now through to the quarter-finals due to start at 6pm today (Wednesday 8th) NZ time. On top of Vic 1’s great success, all four Vic judges (Clodagh O’Connor-McKenna, Ellen Thomson, Chris Bishop, Ranald Clouston) broke.

ADAM Results

Vic 1 and 2 from the Australs squad have just finished ADAM – a pre-Australs tournament hosted at Melbourne University. Both Vic 1 and Vic 2 ended up on three wins from five, unfortunately missing out on the break but having a great tournament. Both teams saw some top Australs judges and things bode well for the real thing starting on July 2nd. On the judging front Ihaia Tichborne broke to the quarter-finals. Ella Edginton was named the 2nd best novice of the tournament, and Richard D’Ath and Seb Templeton were the 9th equal best speakers of the tournament. Sayeqa Islam, also from Vic but not in a Vic team, was awarded the best speaker of the tournament.

Tuesday 28 April: Australs Trials

Author: Seb Templeton

Everyone’s entries for trials should now be in. The trials will be held at 6pm in the SUB on Tuesday. Looks like we’re missing ethics as always. After the trials all speakers will be ranked and the team creation process will happen. The top ranked speaker is given the chance to choose two team-mates who accept or decline. #1 then keeps choosing until there is a team. The choice is made from 6 below the chooser – so #1 can choose down to #6. Every time a speaker declines that band expands by 1. Once the first team is created the next speaker (not in that team) repeats the process. Vic can send 4 teams (12 people) to Australs.

Australs Trials!

Author: Seb Templeton
The Australasian Debating Championships will be held 2-10 July in Melbourne. Please go to www.monashaustrals.com for more information or have a look onwww.debsoc.co.nz for the run down on this international tournament.

Because of the early payment date required for Australs full registration (4 May), Australs trials will be held in the first week back after the Easter break on Tuesday 28 April. Individuals who wish to debate at Australs need to note three things:

1.) Committee has decided that trials will be held for individuals. Individuals will be ranked, and then select their own teams. The top ranked individual is given the chance to select two team-mates from within six ranking of themselves. Those two may accept or decline until a team is formed. The nest top ranked speaker not in a team then repeats the process and so on.

2.) Individuals need to register for trials by Sunday 26 April 5pm - they should do this by emailing vicdebating@gmail.com with their name and preferred speaker position. Please put ‘Australs Trial Registration’ in the subject line so that we can easily see how many trialists we have.

3.) If you trial, you must have $550 AUD ready to be paid, in cash, to the Debsoc account on Wednesday 29 April. This is the registration cost for each debater. It will cover your accomodation and most food whilst you are at Australs. I realise that this is a lot of money but that is one of the costs of going to international tournaments. The society applies to the Vice-Chancellor for sponsorship for Australs each year after trials, and Pat Walsh has been very generous in the past. The reason that we apply after trials is so that we can give the Vice-Chancellor a small biography of the speakers in each team so he knows that he is spending his money well. The sponsorship is in no way guaranteed though. This email is notifying you now so that you can have the cash ready by the time university comes back. The Society does not have enough funds in its account to cover all of the debaters in advance. Speakers will also need to factor in the cost of flights to their budgets.

Judges:
Anyone can go to Australs as a judge, and need not be an accreditted adjudicator. The committee is still deliberating on the process by which to select judges, and as some people may want to go as a judge if they do not get a spot in the Vic squad, it only seems fair to have any selection process after trials. To this end, the Debsoc Account will be able to pay for judges’ full registration, as the Society can only send 4 judges. So judges need not worry about paying immediately for their registration. As soon as committee has decided the dates and process for selecting judges we will let you know.

Please continue to check your emails throughout the week for further updates.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the Committee at vicdebating@gmail.com
