Debsoc hosts a number of different internal competitions throughout the year. A number of them are a great way to learn to debate or gain experience. The internal competitions also range over a great number of different competition types. From the prestigous Plunket Medal for oratory to the fun and well coached internal grades run each trimester, you’ll never be short of a good piece of competition.

Vic Champs – Vic Champs is the most popular internal Vic grade on the Debsoc calendar. It runs through the 1st trimester and is made up of teams with two learning debaters and a coach. Teams always have more than 3 debaters too, so that they can shuffle for weeks that people can’t make it. Vic Champs is a great way to meet new people, or sign up in a team with your mates, and get some valuable coaching week in and week out. Make sure you come along to the intro evening (5 March) or get in touch with a committee member to register your interest before the grade kicks off on Wednesday 19th March. Vic Champs is run in the Australs style, but with shortened speeches.
Pro-Am – Pro-Am is Debsoc’s purely internal competition for helping novice debaters to improve their skills. It is run on a weekend and matches a novice debater with a “pro”. The competition includes a break to semi-finals, a final, and a lot of fun and more serious awards. It’s all light-hearted and a great way to make friends and with a lot of debates it’s a really good way to get into a real debating rhythm early in the year.
BP Pro-Am - Starting in 2008 Vic will run a BP Pro-Am every year in the second trimester. It’s a great way to get 1 on 1 coaching in a tough and strategic style. Like it’s ‘normal’ counterpart, there is a novice matched with a pro, and the competition is run on a weekend with semi-finals and a grand final.
BP Grade – The BP Grade is run as our internal competition in the second trimester, replacing Vic Champs. This grade teaches new debaters how to debate in the complicated but great fun British Parliamentary style of debating. This is the style that the NZ BP tournament and Worlds are run in at the end of the University year. The NZ BP tournament is open, so anyone can debate in it, and in Wellington so it’s definitely a tournament worth practicing for early.

Plunket Medal – The Plunket Medal is Victoria’s 104 year old oratory competition. The winner of the competition recieves a Plunket Medal and their name on the Honour’s Board in the Hunter Building. This is an extremely prestigous event, won by a lot of big names in the past. It’s also a really good way to learn to orate, a skill suited to debaters but very different in practice. Check out last year’s winning oration in the Video Section.
